What is a What is a pharmacist??

Pharmacists are responsible for filling prescription medications and advising on safe use of medications. They check that the medications prescribed by the physician do not interact negatively with one another before dispensing to the patient. They are respected health professionals that advise other healthcare professionals on medication therapies and new advances in medicine. They usually manage pharmacy technicians and interns on the job.

Pharmacists can work in department stores, grocery stores, drug stores, in hospitals, and many other environments. They can also work for the government and with pharmaceutical companies on research.

How much do they make on average?

The median annual salary for pharmacists is about $120,000. The salaries range from approximately $89,000 to $150,000. These numbers vary on location and the type of industry with which you are employed.

    Pharmacists can also be classified by type based on overall duties or responsibilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are four different types of pharmacists:

  • Community pharmacists – work in retail stores and usually work fairly independently while dispensing medication and answering any questions the customers may have.
  • Clinical Pharmacists – work mainly in hospitals and spend their time with direct patient care rather than behind the counter with the prescriptions.
  • Consultant pharmacists – advise healthcare organizations or insurance companies on medication use and management for their patients.
  • Pharmaceutical industry pharmacist – work in maketing, sales or research for drug research and development.
