Currently, a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) is the minimum degree requirement to practice as a physical therapist. There is the option to pursue physical therapy assistant (PTA) degrees for those that choose to work under the supervision of a Physical Therapist; Focus will be on the Doctorate in Physical Therapy programs here. Most physical therapy programs require that you earn a bachelor’s degree prior to matriculation into the program. These are the common general requirements needed when applying to a physical therapy program, but requirements vary by school:

  • Prerequisite courses finished
  • GRE test scores
  • Observational hours
  • Recommendation letters
  • Resume
  • Personal statement
  • **NOTE that many schools require applications to be submitted through the Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). Schools may require that your PTCAS application is VERIFIED by the application service by the deadline, which can take up to 6 weeks after all documents have been submitted. There are fees starting at $140 attached to the PTCAS application to keep in mind. The price increases depending on the number of schools you apply to using the service
